Defense forces four turnovers in loss to Doane
CRETE, Neb. - The Waldorf football team returned to GPAC play Saturday for a road contest at Doane. The Tigers took a halftime edge and maintained the lead throughout in handing the Warriors a 26-7 setback.
Waldorf opened the game with possession and had a positive opening drive. Quarterback Chris Walter completed his first two passes to Mark Pierre and Bryce Jones, respectively. Later, Walter and Jones teamed for a 41-yard reception to the Doane 17-yard line. The drive stalled at the Doane 14-yard line. A 31-yard field goal attempt sailed wide right and Waldorf came away with no points.
Doane took their opening possession and drove 80 yards on 10 plays for the opening points of the game. James Miles II took it in from two yards out for a 6-0 Doane lead. The Tigers added field goals on their next two possessions to take a 12-0 lead. Late in the first half, Doane got in the end zone again on a Reece Zutavern 1-yard rush. Doane would take a 19-0 lead into the halftime locker room.
Doane took the opening possession of the second half and kept the ball for half of the third quarter. A Sam Hartman to Miles II 11-yard touchdown reception extended the Doane lead to 26-0.
The Waldorf defense kept Doane scoreless the rest of the game. Louis Williams entered the game at quarterback for the Warriors in the second half. Late in the game, on a 4th-and-9, Williams completed a 32-yard scoring strike to Jones.
Jones had a great receiving day for Waldorf catching six passes for 115 yards and a touchdown. Walter passed for 114 yards with Williams adding 59. On defense, Waldorf forced four Doane turnovers. Jakim Brock had an interception he returned for 26 yards and a fumble recovery he returned for 18 yards. Keagan Streeter had a 28-yard interception return. Jack Thompson also had a fumble recovery. Luke Beyer led Waldorf with 13 tackles.
Waldorf (0-3, 0-2 in GPAC) stays on the road next Saturday for a game at Mount Marty.
