MWR Duals at Northwestern
ORANGE CITY, Iowa.- Waldorf University men's wrestling fell 4-46 in a road dual at Northwestern College on Thursday, but the Warriors turned in gritty efforts at both ends of the lineup, highlighted by a dominant bonus-point win at 125 pounds.
The dual started on a high note for Waldorf as 125-pounder Malachi Aispuro set the tone with a major decision in the opening bout. Aispuro controlled the match from start to finish, repeatedly getting to his attacks and finishing takedowns while shutting down his opponent's offense. By never allowing Northwestern's wrestler to build momentum, Aispuro not only secured the Warriors' lone team points, but also showed the kind of pace and pressure the lineup aims to model moving forward.
In the middleweights, though, the Warriors ran into trouble. Several bouts turned into long battles on the mat where Waldorf wrestlers struggled to escape from the bottom position. Those stretches tested their resilience as Northwestern piled up riding time and controlled the tempo. Despite the lopsided team score, the Warriors continued to fight through tough positions and worked to keep matches from getting out of hand.
Andy Rodriguez delivered one of the more competitive efforts in that middle stretch. He stayed in striking distance but had difficulty getting to clean offensive attacks early in the match. By the third period, Rodriguez began to pick up the pace, pushing the action and looking to score late. His surge came just a bit too late to flip the result, but his finish showed the kind of urgency that coaches will look to build on as the season progresses.
Even with the 4-46 final, the dual offered clear teaching points for Waldorf. With an emphasis bottom work and mat returns in the practice room after seeing how much time the middleweights spent underneath. At the same time, Aispuro's major decision and the late push from Rodriguez and the heavyweight give the Warriors pieces to build around as they move deeper into the schedule.
Next up, Waldorf will look to turn those bright spots into more complete dual performances. If the Warriors can match Aispuro's early intensity across the lineup and turn those third-period surges into full-match efforts, the team will be in position to tighten scores and flip close bouts the next time out.
