Women's Wrestling Takes Stride at Luther Hill Invite
Indianola, Iowa- The Waldorf Women's Wrestling team stepped foot on the mat in the Luther Hill Invite on Saturday (Nov. 4) where 26 teams competed.
Joanna Hendricks (SR/ Beaumont, CA) competed in the 191-weight class and hit the ground running with a 1st place finish. In round one, Hendricks took the win with a fall at 1:12. In round two, Hendricks won against Jayla Jones from Quincy University with a fall at 2:08. Next, in round three, Hendricks responded quickly with a win by fall at 0:40 against Kennedy Karschner from Southeast CC. In the semi-final round Hendricks continued her quick wins by defeating Brooke Burns by fall at 0:35. Hendricks took first place after Navaeh Garcia's fell to Henricks with a technical fall, 11-0.
Xena Hernandez (SO/ Pacoima, CA) competed in the 235-weight class where she finished in 2nd place. In round one, Hernandez wrestled Breanna Salgado of IWCC and won by fall at 1:02. In round two, Hernandez faces Savannah Kock from Southeast CC and won by fall at 1:53. Hernandez continued her winning streak when she faced Karla Padilla Zepeda from Indian Hills University where Hernandez won by fall at 1:22. Hernandez's winning streak came to an end in the championship match where Hernandez fell to Kiara Boldridge from Southeast CC by fall at 2:47.
Skyler Bruno (FR/ Bakersfield, CA) competed in the 191-weight class. After a first-round bye, Bruno faced Emersen Smith from Wartburg University where Bruno won. By fall at 2:36. Unfortunately, Bruno lost in the third round to Kennedy Eggering from Lindenwood University.
Yazmine Perez (FR/ Bakersfield, CA) competed in the 143-weight class where she placed 2nd. Perez started the tournament off strong with a win against Olivia Cotton from Cornell College by fall at 3:38. Perez followed with another strong win by defeating Justice Seely from Lindenwoon University by fall at 1:59. In the championship match, Perez fell to Lilly Gough from Central Methodist University by decision, 9-0.
Kayla Reddick (FR/ Tacoma, WA) competed in the 136-weight class where she placed 2nd in her class. In round one, Reddick won by decision, 10-3, against Mckenna Decelman from Central Methodist University. In round two, Reddick also won by decision, 13-13, in a close match against Jaden Martin from Missouri Valley College. In round three, Reddick faced her teammate Shianna Bamba and won by fall at 5:11. In the championship round, Reddick fell to Devin Patton in a technical fall, 11-0.
Shianna Bamba (FR/ Peoria, AZ) competed in the 136-weight class alongside some of her teammates. Here, Bamba placed 4th overall. In round one, Bamba had a bye then competed against Kara Rivard from Cornell College in round two where Bamba won by fall at 1:34. In round three, Bamba faced her teammate Reddick and lost by fall at 5:11. Bamba then switched sides of the bracket and faced another teammate of hers, Jennifer Jiminez. Bamba won by fall at 1:40. In her final round, competing for 3rd place, Bamba fell to Jade Martin from Missouri Valley College by fall at 4:39.
Jennifer Jiminez (JR/ Kent, WA) competed with her teammates in the 136-weight class where she finished in 5th place. Jiminez had a bye for her first round then fell to Devin Patton in round two by technical fall, 10-0. Jiminez then switched sides of the bracket where she then faced Mady Sargent of Dakota Wesleyan and won by fall at 1:24. In the next round, Jiminez faced her teammate Bamba and lost by fall at 1:40. Jiminez was then in the match for 5th place where she won by fall at 2:01 against her teammate Neve Barragan.
The Women's Wrestling team will be back in action this Saturday, November 11th, as they host the Waldorf University Open starting at 9:00am.
