Men's Basketball - Warriors Get Overtime Win Against Dickinson State
The Waldorf men's basketball team was back in action for a conference matchup against Dickinson State University this evening. After being down nine with just under three minutes remaining, the Warriors forced overtime and won 92-89.
"That was one heck of a win. Very gutsy plays were made. It was a very good team as we had a lot of guys made plays at various times throughout the game," stated Head Coach Nigel Jenkins.
The Warriors had a strong start with Noah Miller (SO/Forest City, IA) and Khyle Washington (JR/Atlanta, GA) scoring back-to-back. Justin Wiggins (SO/West Palm Beach, FL) drained a three to extend their lead 9-2.
The Blue Hawks scored four points before Zack Meyer (JR/Spring Hill, FL) made a 3-pointer.
Points from Tyree'on Johnson and Washington each scored go up by 10. The Blue Hawks responded with a three.
With just over nine minutes left in the first half, the Blue Hawks score two 3-pointers to make it a two-point game. Noah Gwinn (SO/Liberty, SC) made a jump shot.
The Blue Hawks sink two more threes to take a 29-31 lead. Gwinn tied the game at 31 with a jump shot and Wiggins made a three.
The Warriors stayed up at the end of the first half, 40-35.
Johnson opened the second half with six points for the Warriors to be up by eight. The Blue Hawks went on a 12-0 run and forced Waldorf to call a timeout, being up 51-54.
The Blue Hawks extend their lead to nine halfway through the second half. Meyer and Johnson both score to get the game back within seven.
Five minutes left in regulation, the Blue Hawks were up by ten, 61-71. Washington scored four points and the Warriors were down nine.
Miller came up big with a 3-pointer. The Blue Hawks came back with a layup to be up eight. Johnson grabbed an offensive rebound and Wiggins drained a three.
Blue Hawks scored a layup right before Washington makes a three to be down five with a minute and a half left.
Miller made another three. The Blue Hawks got fouled on a made shot which turned into a three-point play. Wiggins made another three to be down by two.
Khalil Grayson (SO/Milwaukee, WI) grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back to tie the game at 83 and force overtime.
Washington opened overtime with scoring five straight points. The Blue Hawks made two free-throws to make it a three-point game. Grayson scored a layup and the Blue Hawks responded with two points.
Two more made free-throws from the Blue Hawks to make the score 90-89 with 40 seconds left. Wiggins closed out the game with sinking two free-throws to help the Warriors win 92-89.
"I'm proud of the way we handled being down and never giving up. Big game again from Ty Johnson. He had a heck of a weekend," Jenkins said. "Khali made a big play at the end of regulation. Now it's time to rest up and get back to work next week."
Johnson finished the game with a double-double of 22 points and 19 rebounds, with two steals and one assist. Washington added 29 points and six assists. Miller had nine points, going 2-2 from the 3-point line, three assists, and two steals and Wiggins tallied 13 points.
Next up for the Warriors is their final road conference weekend in the regular season next week. The Warriors will start with Presentation College on Friday, Feb. 10th at 7:30 p.m.
