Men's Basketball - Warriors Fall Short Against Saints
The Waldorf men's basketball was back in action for their final conference road weekend of the regular season. The Warriors had a slow start and worked hard for a comeback but fell short 71-82.
The Warriors had a good start with Tyree'on Johnson (SR/Coon Rapids, MN) and Khyle Washington (JR/Atlanta, GA) scoring. Noah Miller (SO/Forest City, IA) extended the lead with a three being up 7-2.
The Saints responded with six straight points to take the lead. Johnson grabbed an offensive rebound and put back to retake the lead at 9-8.
"We came out flat and dug ourselves a hole at half. We have been doing a lot of that on the road," said Head Coach Nigel Jenkins. "It's hard to beat anyone on the road and coming out flat is not the way to go."
Noah Gwinn (SO/Liberty, SC) scored to stop a 10-point run from the Saints.
Zack Meyer (JR/Spring Hill, FL) and Miller each drain a three and Washington added two to close out the half to gain momentum for the second. The Saints were up 29-45.
Justin Wiggins (SO/West Palm Beach, FL) opened the second half with a 3-pointer for the Warriors.
Washington got fouled on a made jump shot and turned it into a three-point play. Less than a minute later, Washington sinks two more free-throws.
Johnson scored two from an offensive rebound to bring the game down to single digits, 50-59.
The Saints scored four points before Miller made a three. The Warriors were down 53-63 with eight minutes remaining.
The Warriors were unable to force a comeback and fell 71-82.
"We fought back and closed the gap, but some couldn't finish the comeback. I'm hoping we learn from this quickly and be better tomorrow against Mayville," Jenkins said.
Johnson had another double-double performance with 17 points and 21 rebounds, with four assists. Washington had 18 points, six rebounds, and three steals and Miller added 14 points.
The Warriors will compete tomorrow, Saturday, Feb. 11th against Mayville State. Tipoff is at 5 p.m.
