Waldorf Men's Basketball Cannot Capitalize on Halftime Lead Against Hastings
FOREST CITY, Iowa. Hastings used a decisive second-half surge to hand Waldorf a 91-80 loss on Wednesday afternoon in Forest City, Iowa, overcoming a five-point halftime deficit behind efficient shooting and timely defense.
Waldorf carried a 44-39 lead into the break after a strong first-half stretch keyed by Conner and Cohen Aldridge on the perimeter. The Warriors' offense found a rhythm from beyond the arc and at the free-throw line, with Conner Aldridge knocking down a pair of late free throws in the closing seconds of the half to give Waldorf its largest cushion heading into the locker room.
Hastings responded after halftime by turning up its efficiency and pressure. The visitors shot 62.0% from the field (31-of-50) and 53.3% from 3-point range (8-of-15) for the game, outscoring Waldorf 52-36 after the break. A key turning point came with 13:35 remaining, when a steal by Myles Simon led to a transition layup from Riley Bombeck, sparking the comeback. Moments later, Simon converted a fastbreak layup to give Hastings a 61-60 lead with 10:29 to play, igniting a run that the Warriors struggled to slow.
Despite the swing in momentum, Waldorf continued to battle behind its backcourt. The Warriors finished 27-of-60 (45.0%) from the floor and 11-of-32 (34.4%) from 3-point range, sharing the ball for 17 assists on 27 made field goals. Waldorf also held a narrow 25-24 edge on the glass and generated 10 offensive rebounds to create second-chance opportunities, staying within striking distance deep into the second half.
Individually, Conner Aldridge led Waldorf with a game-high 23 points on 8-of-14 shooting, including 3-of-8 from beyond the arc, while adding three rebounds and two assists in 36 minutes. Krys Watley provided another strong two-way effort with 17 points and a team-high six rebounds to go with two assists in 38 minutes. Earlier, Cohen Aldridge's 3-pointer at the 3:32 mark of the first half had helped Waldorf seize a 38-32 lead, highlighting the Warriors' strong opening stretch.
Hastings answered with a balanced attack, led by DaRon Hall's 20 points on 7-of-9 shooting, including 2-of-2 from deep, along with four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Maverick Binder added 14 points, five rebounds and six assists while going 8-of-11 at the foul line, sealing the final margin with two free throws in the closing seconds. Perimeter threat Cameron Coraggio chipped in 14 points and four 3-pointers, including a key trey with 2:49 left that pushed the lead to 78-72 as Hastings pulled away.
Defensively, Hastings forced 11 Waldorf turnovers and turned them into transition opportunities, finishing with 19 assists and eight steals to fuel its second-half rally. Waldorf's effort on the boards and perimeter kept the contest competitive into the final minutes, but the combination of Hastings' efficiency and late-game execution at the free-throw line proved to be the difference down the stretch.
