Women’s Golf competes at Spring Storm Classic
INDIANOLA, Iowa – Ashlyn Gutierrez led the way for the Warriors at the Storm Spring Classic on Wednesday, shooting a 93 (+22) to come in 15th place at the Indianola Golf Club. Gutierrez played the five par-3s at just one-over, including a 35-yard chip-in birdie at the fourth hole.
Teams endured a one-hour delay near the end of the round as weather passed through the Des Moines metro. Players were pulled off the course to let lightning and rain subside before finishing the last few holes.
Waldorf finished with an 18-hole score of 398 (+114) for third place in the field of three. Host team Simpson (IA) claimed top honors with a score of 335 (+51).
Kristen Roe of Simpson won the home event with a seven-over-par 78 on the par-71, 5,670-yard layout featuring tight, tree-lined fairways on the front-nine and a more open layout on the back-nine with several ponds and streams to navigate.
Sophomore Shelby Effle was Waldorf's second-best finisher, placing 17th with a 96.
Behind her were Laynee Simpson and Lindsay Clouse, who posted 103 and 106 to find 20th and 22nd on the leaderboard, respectively.
Ciara Barnett rounded out the top five for the Warriors, shooting a 155 to finish in 26th.
"The tournament provided some great preparation for the conference tournament," said head coach Mark Clouse. "Having some good competitive opportunities will no doubt help our team get ready for the final event of the season."
The women's golf team is off until the GPAC Championships being contested this year at Dakota Dunes Country Club in Dakota Dunes, South Dakota April 27-28. Automatic bids to the NAIA National Championship are on the line, as both the winning team and individual of the 54-hole will move on to Eagle Crest Golf Club in Ypsilanti, Michigan, May 19-22.
