Waldorf Softball Split against St. Ambrose
FOREST CITY, Iowa – The Waldorf softball team returned to their home field for a quick turnaround with a non-conference doubleheader against St. Ambrose. The Warriors finished with a split on the day, getting a comeback 6-5 win and then dropping the second 5-9.
The Fighting Bees opened the first game on a fielder's choice RBI. Brooke Hickey (SO/Adel, IA) tied the game off an RBI single from Kassidy Elyea (JR/Sioux Falls, SD).
In the 3rd inning, the Fighting Bees took the lead with scoring two runs and extended the lead by adding a run in both the 4th and 6th inning.
In the bottom of the 6th, Elyea had another RBI single to start the comeback. Kaela Eslinger (JR/Macksburg, IA) scored the third run off an RBI single by Alyssa Oswald (JR/Wasilla, AK). Elyea scored on a throwing error from the Fighting Bees. Kyleigh Morris (JR/Papillion, NE) and Hickey came up with back-to-back RBIs with Oswald and Gabby Bierly (FR/Eagan, MN) scoring to win the game 6-5.
McKenna Mentink (SR/Mason City, IA) started on the mound for the Warriors and pitched five innings. Mentink finished with two strikeouts. Oswald pitched the last two innings and had only one walk.
For the second game, the Fighting Bees opened with an RBI single. Eslinger tied the game in the bottom of the inning.
St. Ambrose added five runs in the 2nd inning to extend their lead 1-6.
In the bottom of the 3rd, Bierly got an RBI single with Hickey scoring and Elyea scored the final run for the Warriors.
The Fighting Bees closed out the game in the 7th inning by adding three runs to win 3-9.
Alex Mathers (SR/Greene, IA) started pitching for the Warriors and finished with one strikeout and zero walks. Maddie Dalke (JR/Medford, OR) came in to pitch five innings and had three strikeouts.
Next up for the Warriors is an away conference series against Bellevue starting on Saturday, April 15th at 2 p.m.
