Waldorf Softball Drops 2 on Season Opener
SIOUX CENTER, IA - The Waldorf softball team had their season opener today in Sioux Center, IA. Game one was played against Bismarck State University with an 11-5 loss. Game two was played against Dickinson State University with a 25-1 loss.
Game One:
Bismarck state got on the board with three runs in the first inning from 2 walks, a single and a double from B. Arnold. The Warriors also tacked on two of their own in the bottom frame of the first. Freshman Kylie Bates started off her collegiate campaign with a basehit to left field. Sophomore Reagan Ridout followed that with a walk. Senior Gabby Bierly reached on an error from Bismarck's third baseman. Junior Jenna Busch hit in both runs with a long single to left center field.
Bismarck would put another on the board in the 3rd on a solo shot by B. Wrangham. They scored 3 more runs in the top of the fourth on a double, a triple, and a walk. In the fifth, another would score. Lastly, in the top of the seventh, they would score 3 more runs to cap off the game. The Warriors two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a single from R. Ridout, and a single from Bierly. Junior Hailey Michalik's single to right field would score both. Waldorf would score one final run in the bottom of the seventh after a walk from R. Ridout and another single from Michalik. Though a triumphant effort, it would not be enough for the Warriors to come back from the deficit.
Kylie Bates went 1-3.
Reagan Ridout went 1-2 with 2 walks.
Gabby Bierly went 3-4.
Jenna Busch went 1-3 with a walk.
Hailey Michalik went 3-4 with a double.
Sophia Asimakopoulos went 1-2.
Dionne Lopez went 1-3.
Reagan Ridout took the loss in the circle with 3.1 innings pitched on 5 hits, 4 walks, and 4 strikeouts.
Game Two:
The Warriors struggled through all 5 innings only getting 6 total baserunners, with 1 hit, 2 hit by pitches, and 3 walks.
Freshman Avery Mauldin broke up the no-hitter in the second inning on a single to center field. Sophomore Maili Jackson would score the only run of the game for the Warriors on a two out walk. She would then steal second and score on a throwing error made by the Dickinson State catcher. Dickinson would score 25 runs on 22 hits.
Sophomore Jaycee Plath would take the loss in the circle after only throwing 1.2 innings. She gave up 9 hits and 6 freebies.
The Warriors will be back in action for day two in Sioux Center at 9AM and 1PM.
