Warriors Fall Short to Royals 69-53
FULLERTON, CA – The Waldorf women's basketball team returned to the Hope International Royals Winter Basketball Tournament for a game against the host school on Tuesday afternoon. The Warriors were defeated 69-53.
"Proud of how we competed against a very good opponent. Overall, we didn't shoot it well enough to get over the hump today, but showed improvement in other aspects of the game," stated Head Coach Shawn Chaffin. "Our bench was strong. Brooke had an impressive performance."
1st Quarter: Fatou Barry (JR/Gwinnett, GA) started the with two free-throws and Brooke Dial (FR/Dallas, TX) drained a three. The Royals were up 9-5 over the Warriors. Dial went on to scored six straight points and Waldorf was down 12-17.
2nd Quarter: The Royals opened the second quarter with a 16-0 run. Lizzie Garza (SR/Brownsville, TX) stopped the run with a jump shot and Camryn McQuery (JR/Waseca, MN) added two more points. Barry forced a Royals turnover which resulted in Dial making a layup. The Royals were up at the end of the first half 40-25.
3rd Quarter: After Garza made a jump shot, the Royals scored 10 straight points. Garza and Alyah Abrahamson (SO/Browersville, MN) combined for 5-6 from the free throw line. The Royals closed out the quarter with a three to end the quarter.
4th Quarter: The Warriors had their highest scoring quarter with 18 points and held the Royals to nine. Abrahamson started things off for the Warriors with a three-pointer. Barry got fouled on a made shot and drained the free-throw for a three-point play. Garza then forced a Royals turnover with a steal and made a fast break layup. The Warriors lost 69-53.
Chaffin added, "This was a fun experience for our team spending the past 5 days in Southern California making memories of a lifetime, getting the full student-athlete experience."
Dial finished with a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds. Garza finished with 13 points and 6 rebounds and Barry added 7 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals. Barry went 5-5 from the free-throw line.
Next up, the Warriors will be back in action for a road game against Judson (IL) on Friday, December 29th. Tip-off is at 6 pm.
