No. 9 Dakota State Pushes Past Waldorf
FOREST CITY, IA – The Warriors could not bottle up Friday night's success into Saturday afternoon. No. 9 Dakota State posted an early run, added to it in each of the middle quarters and pushed past Waldorf University in women's basketball action, 85-53.
Following the Warriors' Camryn McQuery layup to pull the home team to within 8-4, the Trojans (20-4) ran off the next eight points to open an early 16-4 lead. Waldorf cut it back to a two possession game at 16-10 on back-to-back treys from Sandra Christian and Brook Dial, but it would be as close to the lead it would get. Nationally-ranked Dakota State had a 10-point lead at the end of the first, added seven to it by half and took command in the third period for the win.
Dial paced the Warriors with a solid 19-point and 7-rebound contest as the lone double figure player. Edosa Ogbemudia chipped in eight points, four rebounds and a pair of blocked shots. Both Christian and Lizzie Garza, who grabbed six boards and swiped two balls, hit for six. Lindsay Field and Fatou Berry each finished with five tallies.
Dakota State received a game-best 20 points from Savannah Walsdorf. The Trojans downed 11 of their 23 treys they took and outrebounded the home team 40-23.
Following an opening Trojan free throw in the second quarter, Dial laid in a bucket and made it a 25-18 deficit. Waldorf was able to pull to within eight points two more times in the frames, 28-20 and 30-22. Dakota State claimed the last six minutes of the first half by a 13-4 margin and held a 43-26 intermission advantage.
Waldorf returns to action next Friday evening, Feb. 9, at Dickinson State (ND) in a 6:30 p.m. CST start.
