Hockey Signs Carney for 2023-24 Season
The Waldorf Hockey Team bolstered its defensive unit Monday, with Head Coach Mike Heitkamp announcing the commitment of Devin Carney. Carney's signing is the latest in a rapid series of additions to the 2023-24 squad.
"Devin is a huge addition to our defensive unit, as well as the program," Heitkamp said. "He is a big and mobile defenseman that can take control of the defensive zone. He skates well for a bigger bodied guy and sees the ice well in all three zones. His strongest attribute is that he simplifies his game and does not overreact."
Carney, a native of Wasilla, Alaska, is a veteran junior hockey player, having played three full seasons in the North American 3 Hockey League (NA3HL). The defenseman broke into the junior ranks with the Bozeman Icedogs in 2020-21 before joining the Long Beach Ice Sharks for the last two campaigns.
In each season with Long Beach, Carney was selected to play for NA3HL Top Prospects teams. The righthanded shooter has shown an ability to light the lamp, scoring seven goals for Long Beach in a 2021-22 season that included a trip to the Fraser Cup Playoffs In all, Carney has played in 135 career NA3HL sanctioned games.
"He is one of the guys that we have been keeping an eye on for two years," said Coach Heitkamp. "He is very capable of coming in his freshman year and having a major impact to our program both on and off the ice. I see Devin being a critical part of our success as we continue to develop our hockey program. We expect him to take on a leadership role in his career at Waldorf. We are extremely excited to see him in a Warrior jersey next fall."
Carney becomes the fourth junior hockey veteran to join a growing incoming freshman class as Waldorf strives to take another step forward next season. The Warriors recently finished a 13-win campaign, the program's most victories as an ACHA Division 1 program. Waldorf will begin its 2023-24 season in September.
