Waldorf Finds Net First, Midland Rides Second-Period for Win
FREMONT, Neb. – The visiting Warriors found the net first on Friday night. After a deadlocked opening period, Midland University rode a three-goal second and five-straight scores overall for the 8-3 men's hockey victory over Waldorf University.
Following two tough non-scoring matches against the No. 1 team last weekend, Morgan Sweeney put Waldorf on the scoreboard first with a goal 5:58 into the night. The lead, though, only last 3:53 before Midland tied the game on a power play, scored the lone trio of second-frame goals and netted the first in the final period to spur on its effort and built a 5-1 lead. Waldorf scored two of the following three goals, one each by Hunter Beckett and Jake Lindblom, but the visitors could get no closer than three scores, 5-2 and 6-3.
In the outing, Sweeney's goal came unassisted in the first period. Beckett's second score of the year came off a pass from Jeremiah Lebsack, while Geoffrey Dick hit the puck over to Lindblom, who netted his eighth of the season.
Jordan Berschiminsky logged 41:10 in between the pipes and saved 38 Midland shot attempts. Vaughn Holbeche came on in relief and had nine saves.
Midland received a pair of goals and an assist from Ian McHenry. He assisted on the game-tying goal in the first, score the go-ahead goal and added another late in the match.
The two teams return to the rink for to complete the series on Saturday night (Feb. 10) in a 7:30 p.m. face-off.
