Warriors win first GPAC contest with sweep over Briar Cliff
FOREST CITY, Iowa - The home crowd at Hanson Fieldhouse was treated to a bit of history Wednesday night. The Warriors volleyball team won their first conference match as a member of the GPAC with a sweep of Briar Cliff (25-16, 25-21, 25-11). In another bit of history, senior outside hitter Kenzie Kidd became the ninth player in program history to record 1,000 career digs. Earlier this year, she reached the 1,000 career kills milestone. She is just the second player in program history to achieve both career milestones.
Waldorf gained control of a tight first set with a five-point spurt that gave Waldorf an 11-6 lead. Later, leading 17-13, a 7-0 run off the serve of Kaylee Kidd put Waldorf on the edge of a first-set win. After three Briar Cliff points, a Kenzie Kidd kill ended the set with a 25-16 Warrior win.
The Warriors fell behind 4-0 early in the second set. Waldorf would battle back to tie it at 9 following an Alicia Brandt kill. Later, tied at 20, Waldorf scored five of the final six points of the set to take a 2 sets to 0 lead.
The third set was all Waldorf. The Warriors scored the final 10 points of the match, again off a series of great serves from Kaylee Kidd.
Kenzie Kidd reached double figures in both kills (10) and digs (11) Wednesday night. Anna Longhenry led a balanced Waldorf offensive attack with 12 kills.
Waldorf (7-5, 1-2 in GPAC) remains at home for another GPAC contest Saturday against Dordt at 3 p.m. A JV match precedes the varsity match at 1:30 p.m.
