Firebirds Slip Past Warriors in Final At Bat
TUCSON, AZ – The Warriors saw their lead chipped away as the game went on until the end. Waldorf University saw its two-run lead fall away until Carthage College was able to slip past with a final run in the bottom of the ninth for the 6-5 baseball victory.
After Carthage tied the contest at 4-4 after five frames, Juan Jorge led off the top of the sixth with a walk, moved to third on an Ian Carr single and raced home on Rylee Rauch's sacrifice to edge ahead, 5-4. Carthage retied the contest on a lead-off solo home run in the home sixth before a RBI double following a pair of walks plated the game winner in the ninth for the win.
Ryan Webster led Waldorf (9-6) with a 3 for 5 day and an RBI as the only multiple hit player. Kolby Amaral, Tyler Wytulka, who drove in a pair, and Carr added singled.
Trailing 2-0 heading into the top of the third, Wytulka lined a two-run single to score both Rauch and Amaral, who reached on an error and singled, to cut the deficit in half. Three batters later, Webster drove in the third score with a hit and the Warriors took the lead at 4-2, on a Firebird error off Juan Jorge's bat.
Waldorf returns to the Tucson diamond on Wednesday morning (March 6) in a 10:30 a.m. CST first pitch against Dakota Wesleyan.
