PONCA CITY, Okla. – The Waldorf Baseball team traveled to Ponca City, Oklahoma to open their season with the William Penn University Statesmen last weekend.
On Saturday, in game 1, William Penn defeated Waldorf 7-2. Waldorf scored first on an RBI single by Ryland Humphrey in the top of the second, but William Penn tied it in the bottom of the second on a solo home run and took the lead in the third on a three-run homer. William Penn added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to go up 7-1. Waldorf scored once in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by AJ Toulouse for the final run, finishing 7-2 in favor of the Statesmen. In game 2, William Penn won 12-0. William Penn collected 14 hits to build and secure the lead.
On Sunday, William Penn defeated Waldorf 18-9 in game 1. William Penn scored early on a 4-run first inning and added a seven-run fourth. Waldorf answered in the first with a 4-RBI homer from Cameron Bailey and chipped away with a three-run fifth highlighted by Elijah Guemez's two-run double. William Penn pulled away with additional scoring in the sixth and a five-run seventh to finish with 18-9.
In game 2, Waldorf secured a 7-4 win over William Penn. Dylan Battye started the scoring for both teams with a run in the fourth inning. The Statesmen took a brief lead with a two-run fifth-inning homer but Waldorf scored six runs in the bottom of the fifth, keyed by a three-run homer from Cameren Rindone and later a two-run double from Ryland Humphrey to take a 7-2 lead. William Penn added two runs in the seventh but could not complete a comeback and the Warriors earned a 7-4 win.
The team travels to Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas with start times of 12pm on Saturday, February 14 and Sunday, February 15.
