Berg's Complete-Game Shutout Brings Home Another Win for the Warriors
ATCHISON, Kan. – Waldorf competed against Benedictine for two more games on Monday, resulting in a loss 8-7 and a win 3-0.
In game 1, Waldorf nearly erased a six-run deficit with a late surge, but the Warriors' comeback bid came up just short. Trailing 7-1 after four, Waldorf scored three times in the fifth to trim the deficit to 7-4, once in the sixth, and twice more in the seventh to climb back into contention. In the fifth inning, Cameron Bailey and Mason Smith each drove in a run with RBI singles, and another run scored on a defensive miscue. In the sixth, Smith came through again with an RBI single to bring Waldorf within 7-5, capping a two-RBI, three-hit day that also included a stolen base. Down 8-5 in the top of the seventh, Waldorf put the tying run in scoring position when Jack Kamalski doubled to center to drive in two runs and cut the margin to 8-7. The Warriors brought the potential go-ahead run to the plate, but Benedictine recorded the final out on a pop-up to second base by Bailey to end the game.
In game 2, in the second inning, Waldorf put a runner in scoring position, and Dylan Battye lifted a sacrifice fly that brought home Tyler Tamez for a 1-0 lead. Waldorf carried the one-run lead into the seventh when Smith delivered a run-scoring double to left-center to push the lead to 2-0. With two outs, Cameren Rindone doubled to left, allowing Smith to score and extending the advantage to 3-0. Brandon Berg finished out the game and kept the Ravens scoreless. He walked just one and struck out six on 92 pitches. Benedictine finished with only three hits.
The Warriors travel to Hesston College in Hesston, Kansas for their next series on Saturday and Sunday, February 21 and 22. The first game on Saturday will begin at 1pm and on Sunday at 12pm.
