Waldorf splits DH to VCSU, splits 4-game set
FOREST CITY, Iowa - The Waldorf baseball team used a seventh-inning rally to take the first game Saturday against Valley City State, but another late rally fell short in the nightcap as they split the four-game set.
Very windy conditions Saturday made pop ups treacherous, but both teams managed the conditions well. The opening game saw only four combined hits from the Warriors and Vikings. Waldorf played some small ball to get on the board first. In the third inning, Juan Jorge drew a one-out walk and advanced to second on an Ian Carr hit-by-pitch. Jorge advanced to third on a wild pitch and later scored on another wild pitch. In the fourth inning, Anthony Hibl drove in a run with a two-out single to left to give Waldorf a 2-0 lead. Valley City scored three in the top of the sixth to take a 3-2 lead. It stayed that way until the bottom of the seventh. Jorge was third base with no outs. He scored the tying run on a Riley Rauch RBI. A walk and a single loaded the bases. Ryan Webster drew a walk to bring in the winning run. Zach Meyer started on the mound for Waldorf. He tossed five hitless innings, struck out seven, but also walked seven. Titan Klunder got the win in relief with 1.1 innings of scoreless baseball in the 4-3 win.
There was more offense in the second game. Valley City held a 7-2 after seven. Waldorf scored two in the eighth to tighten the cap to 7-4. Kolby Amaral homered to start the Waldorf ninth to bring it to 7-5. A Tyler Wytulka single extended the game, but a fielder's choice ended the rally and the game.
Waldorf (14-18, 4-8 in NSAA) hosts a non-conference game Tuesday against Mount Mercy at 4 p.m.
