Warriors edged late in overtime by Eagles
ALBERT LEA, Minn. - The Warriors' search for the win went to the limit Saturday night. After tying the game midway through the third period, Waldorf University was edged with only 17.1 seconds left in overtime, 6-5, by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on the men's hockey ice.
Trailing by a goal following a third-period Eagles score, the Warriors deadlocked the contest, 5-5, when Blake Raddatz knocked in a pass off Zach Jimenez's stick at 9:46 left in regulation. In overtime, the two foes played until UW-La Crosse found the game-winner with 17.1 ticks left.
Waldorf (2-9) suffered its third one-goal defeat of the fall and the closest to coming out on top of the five meetings against UW-La Crosse. In fact, the Warriors outshot the Eagles by a 56-40 total.
Jimenez was the top star of the Warrior effort. The veteran center produced a 'hat trick' with three goals and assisted on the final goal.
Along with Raddatz's score, Jordan Radke accounted for the other home goal. Tony Romani assisted on two Waldorf goals. Treyson White, Anthony Aulisio, and KC Hook each recorded one assist apiece.
In the net, Zane Redfern stopped 34 of the 40 shots he faced in the 64:43 in net.
Jimenez helped Waldorf jump ahead quickly on the visitors when White and Aulisio assisted on his shot only 32 seconds in the match. The Eagles, though, immediately tied the contest only 12 seconds later for a 1-1 tally. UW-La Crosse added a second score midway through the opening period (10:39) for a 2-1 lead.
The Eagles pushed it to a 2-goal difference, 3-1, only 1:27 into the second stanza. Jimenez found the back of the Eagle net for the second time at 11:33. UW-La Crosse made it 4-2 with 4:59 left in the second frame.
Radke answered with Waldorf's third score 1:05 later. Jimenez tied the match, 4-4, off a Romani helper with only 6.9 seconds before the second intermission.
Again, UW-La Crosse edged ahead, 5-4, in the first five minutes of the final period. Raddatz tied the game again just under five minutes later at 5-5.
Waldorf and UW-La Crosse complete their 2-game weekend set on Sunday afternoon starting at 1 p.m.
